Tuning Up with Rapper, Coach, Speaker, L. C. Alexander
Q&A with Round Rock McNeil Basketball Coach, Rapper, and Speaker
Tune-Up Tuesday is an extension of The Monday Morning Coach, helping all of us to stay motivated past the Monday morning motivational and into Tuesday when the reality of persistence is more difficult to carry out than the concept itself. The objective is to interview and profile artists, athletes, former athletes, and coaches to offer varying perspectives on how music influences the way we compete, workout, and stay motivated when it’s sometimes difficult.
Think for a moment of your favorite artist or an artist serious about their lyricism. Then think of a deeply invested motivator, perhaps someone who’s motivated you in life. Now combine the two and you get L.C. Alexander.
L.C. loves music and he loves motivating people. It oozes through his content and profession. He is a former basketball player for Abilene Christian University, current basketball coach at Round Rock McNeil High School, and is in his sixth year of coaching. He’s married to his wonderful wife, Caley, and they have two beautiful daughters, Eliza and Hollyn. Overall, he is passionate about developing young athletes and helping them grow both on and off the court, striving to lead to success in every season.
As a husband, father, musician, speaker, and coach, he balances many hats and titles, but his giving spirit energizes everyone around him. Read our Q&A about how he uses music to help drive his passions to pull others up.
The Monday Morning Coach: Apple Music or Spotify? Or neither?
L. C. Alexander: Spotify
TMMC: What’s on your “recently played” section of your streaming service?
LC: “Praise” by WHATUPRG
TMMC: What’s a genre of music the people you know might be surprised you’re into?
LC: Been listening to more country lately
TMMC: Playlists or albums? And why?
LC: Depends. If an artist I like just dropped ima listen to the whole album. But after it’s been out a while and I know my favorite tracks, I’m back to playlist.
TMMC: When preparing for a big meeting or event, what’s your go-to song, playlist, album, or genre? And why?
LC: Go to song is “Go Hard” by Lecrae, or “Saved Me” by 1k Phew
TMMC: How has your taste in music evolved over the years, and what does that say about your personal growth?
LC: I mean honestly I’ve been pretty open to all sorts of music my whole life.
TMMC: Do you prefer listening to music solo or sharing it with friends?
LC: Solo.
TMMC: What’s an album or song, or who’s an artist, that’s helped you get through a difficult stretch of a season (of life, work, or a sport’s season)?
LC: I’d say J Cole has always had tracks that helped me. Here’s an artist with all the fame and fortune but has been very clear that the finer things in life are often free, and money doesn’t buy complete happiness.
TMMC: If you could collaborate with any musician, living or dead, who would it be and why?
LC: KB. I feel like he is an incredible artist
TMMC: Okay let’s talk about competition. What does it mean to you and how has it influenced your outlook on life today?
LC: Competition means being better today than you were yesterday. It reminds me that I don’t have to be perfect but I do need to make sure I’m on the right track to improvement daily.
TMMC: As a coach and a musician, what are similar ways you use your talents to help motivate your athletes and your audiences?
LC: When I drop music I try and let my players AND their families know about it. I figured if they truly want to know why I do what I do, they can listen to my music and get a behind the scenes look as to why I do what I do.
TMMC: What role does music play in your creative process or daily routine?
LC: I gotta have it. Before each day and at the end of each day!
TMMC: Do you use music to help amp you up or calm you down before a big event? How about during a workout (if you workout)?
LC: I use it for both. I have to!
TMMC: If you had to create a soundtrack for your life, which three songs (yours or someone else’s) would definitely be on it?
LC: Just released a project called 2010. I’d pick the track “2010,” 1K phew’s “Saved Me,” and “Sideline Stories” by J. Cole
TMMC: Lastly, how do you “tune-up” your Tuesdays when work, life, or workouts feel monotonous or difficult?
LC: I usually turn up by calming down. That might sound weird. But I just center and ground myself. If I’m collected and grounded I am able to be of better service.
TMMC: L. C., my friend—thank you so much for your time. I know the readers will appreciate the perspectives you shared.
